Installation of the SP230 Card in Windows 2000

In Windows 2000, sometimes the installation of the SP230 card needs some manual intervention, you may get a "Code 31" error displayed for one of the SP230 ports, and when you insert the card for the first time, you may be prompted to reboot the PC.  The Device Manager may show a problem with the device as below:

What a very intelligent and stable OS ;-(

You will notice that Windows 2000 has assigned a COM port number to an LPT port! If you select the properties for the "SP230 Lpt Port (COMx)" you will see the device properties page below.

You need to manually assign the LPT port number to the card, click on the "Port Settings" tab and select the next available LPT port in your PC.

The example below sets the port number to 2 (as there is a build-in LPT port on this PC).

Click "OK" and the following message may appear:

Just click "Yes", then if you are prompted to do so, reboot your PC.

After the reboot, you should find the SP230 card is now setup and functioning correctly. You can verify this in the Device Manager, check there are no yellow exclamation marks!

When correctly installed, the SP230 will appear in the Device Manager as in this picture:

Please note: The assigned COM port and LPT port numbers may be different on your PC!
