Using the U111 with a Sierra Wireless Aircard Models
Most Sierra Wireless Aircard models are 16-bit and are supported by the U111. However there is only partial support for these models, so please read this page before you purchase a U111 to use with them.
The Aircard 850 and 860 models
The Aircard 850 and 860 models are the newest, high speed cards from Sierra Wireless.
These cards are 16-bit cards, but do not use a standard serial UART so are not 'natively' compatible with the U111-530/630 model.
A standard modem port is provided and it has been possible to modify the U111-530/630 so that you can use the Aircard models in a U111 to make a network connection. This modification has been made in October 2006, so if you are puchasing check with your supplier that the U111 you are supplied with is the most recent version.
ALL Aircard Models
This information on this web page applies to all 16-bit Aircard models, including :
- Aircard 555 (now discontinued)
- Aircard 775
- Aircard 850
- Aircard 860
When using a Sierra Wireless card, you cannot use the 'dashboard' software that your operator provides (or the Sierra Wireless Watcher software) to send text messages or perform other functions. You can run a VPN down your connection (as with any other modem connection) if you wish, although you will have to set up with VPN in the usual way once the connection is established.
This is because the U111 does not have access to both ports of the Aircard, only to the modem port.
You will need to set up a Dial Up connection manually, using the Aircard modem port just like a standard modem. To help you, we have some installation guides which take you through this process :
