ZigBee

ZigBee is a communications standard designed to offer low cost, low power networking over a short range. It has been developed by the IEEE and the Zigbee Alliance and is expected to be used to connect items in your home, the workplace and industrial and medical environments.

Key advantages of ZigBee are it's low power and processor requirements which are much smaller than any previous technology (such as Bluetooth) which has been proposed for these applications. The 2.4GHz band used is licence free so ZigBee roll-out is expected to be rapid once devices are widely available. Data rates are up to 250KBPS.
